A well-equipped, well-sheltered family site set in 1200 acres of
natural beauty enhanced by diverse woodland and a variety of attractive
man made features, such as the world's largest hedged maze. The
site is situated within walking distance of Castlewellan town. The
mile-long lake with trout fishing is ringed by hills and open areas
of parkland. The Annesley Garden and Arboretum comprise a series
of attractive and distinctive features of which the walled garden
is the magnificent focal point. The collection of trees and shrubs
are set in beautifully landscaped surroundings and incorporate fountains,
ponds, ornamental greenhouses and broad sweeping vistas. The Castle,
(now used as a conference centre) is built in the Scottish baronial
style, and sits at the base of the wooded slopes overlooking the
lake. Four waymarked trails of varying length wind through the forest
leading you into some of the park's most beautiful wooded areas.
These trails follow a circular route and are signposted from the
lakeside car park.
Castlewellan forest offers extensive facilities for the caravan
or camping enthiuast. There are modern toilets and showers, together
with a fresh water supply, chemical toilet disposal point and electricity
hook up for caravans. Prices for the year 2003 are as follows:-

Low Season 1 October - Thursday before Easter

Magnificent Himalayan Cedars with their wide spreading branches
form an imposing and picturesque entrance to the park. The park
itself covers an area of about 1,000 acres at the foot of the Mourne
Mountains and offers panoramic views of the surrounding mountains
and the sea at nearby Newcastle, while within its own boundaries
there are many vistas of woodland and rivers. Four waymarked trails
of varying lengths take the visitor on a circular route around forests,
lakes, ponds and rivers (strong footwear is recommended). The tree-shaded
Shimna River flows through the centre of the park, punctuated by
numerous deep pools, and is home to a wide variety of wildlife.
Linger a while in the Arboretum which contains a broad diversity
of trees and colourful shrubs.
Tollymore forest offers extensive facilities for the caravan
or camping enthiuast. The site comprises 110 touring pitches, 72
of which are hardstanding. There are modern heated toilets and showers
with disabled facilities, together with a fresh water supply, chemical
toilet disposal point and a 6A electricity hook up for caravans.
Also available on site are a laundry room, washing up room and
gas exchange.
A seperate campsite is available for youth organisations. Prices
for the year 2002 are as follows:-

Meelmore
Lodge
This quarter-of-an-acre campsite is an place to camp for school
and Duke of Edinburgh Award groups as it is open all year round.
The camping ground is situated at the foot of the Mournes, beside
Meelmore Lodges own mountain access, which leads onto the
Trassey Track (the main mountain access in the area). The campsite
costs £2 per person per night. Showers and running water is
available.
